Pay with card

Paystack accepts debit and credit cards from all over the world issued by Mastercard, Visa or Verve. We also accept American Express (Amex) cards for businesses in Nigeria and South Africa. This feature is on by default for businesses in South Africa, while businesses in Nigeria must follow the steps below to activate the payment channel.

To make a payment via the card channel, you only need to provide your card details and authorise the transaction via our two-factor authentication process. This is done by providing your card pin, a one-time password and/or 3D Secure authorisation.

An American Express (Amex) card is an electronic payment card issued and processed by American Express, the world's largest integrated global payment platform.

Businesses in South Africa can accept payments via Amex by default. In contrast, you need to follow the steps below for Nigeria-based businesses to turn on AmEx payments:

1. To receive payments from Amex cards as a Nigerian-based business, you must first be enabled for international payments. To enable international payments for your business, please refer to this article.

2. Go to your Dashboard preferences under Settings and tick the American Express box under 'Card preferences.'

Important to note

South African-based businesses can receive Amex card payments by default.

Can foreign customers pay me with their credit or debit cards?

Yes, customers anywhere in the world can pay you with their foreign cards if you have international payments enabled for your business and if their card association is either Visa, MasterCard or Verve. 

Nigerian and South African-based businesses can also accept international payments from American Express cards.  You can learn more about international transactions on Paystack here.

Can I receive recurring payments or subscriptions with the Pay with Card channel?

Yes, customers can make recurring payments with the Pay with Card Channel. However, Nigerian-based businesses won't be able to collect recurring payments from customers using their American Express cards.
