Ghana Electronic Transfer Levy Act (E-Levy)
The Electronic Transfer Levy Act (e-levy) is a tax the Ghanaian Government imposes on electronic transactions apart from those exempted by law.
Anyone who uses electronic means (mobile money, bank account or card) to pay a business/individual not registered with the GRA will be charged the levy.
The entities responsible for charging the levy on behalf of the Ghana Revenue Authority are mobile money providers like MTN Momo, Vodafone Cash, AirtelTigo Money, etc., Payment Service Providers (PSPs) like Paystack, banks and other financial institutions prescribed by Regulations.
There are three ways the e-levy charge will affect your Paystack business;
When your customer makes a payment to you that is above GHS 100 either via mobile money or their local bank card, they will be charged 1% of the amount as an e-levy. You will not be charged at this point. The e-levy only applies to domestic payments and transfers. Payments you receive from international cards will not be charged.
When you transfer from your Paystack balance to a customer for an amount above GHS 100, we will charge you 1% of the amount you’re transferring, which will be remitted to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). This charge will be deducted from your Paystack balance.
When you receive a payout above GHS 100, we will deduct 1% of the amount on behalf of the GRA and remit the difference to you.
Exceptions from the Ghana Electronic Transfer Levy Act (E-Levy)
Under the law, payments made to businesses or individuals ("specified merchant payments") will not be subject to the e-levy as long as the business or individual is registered with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and is in good standing with all the applicable tax requirements.
Please upload your valid Ghana Card if you run a Starter Business or your Tax Identification Number (TIN) if you’re a Registered Business on your Paystack Dashboard.
A valid Ghana card or Tax Identification Number (TIN) will be the primary method for verifying your registration with the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Once you upload the requested information, each payment made to and from your business will be verified against your tax compliance status with the GRA. If the GRA validates your e-levy exemption status, payments from your customers to your business will not attract the e-levy.
You can read more on the e-levy on the official website of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Ghana GPS address
The GPS address is Ghana's official digital property addressing system, covering every part of the country to ensure accurate and easy location identification.
The national digital address comprises your postal code and your unique address. The first letter in the postcode represents your region of residence, and the second represents the district.
For example, for GPS address: GA-183-8164, 'GA-183' is the area's postal code, where 'G' is the region (Greater Accra Region), 'A' is the district (Accra district), and '8164' is the unique address.
The importance of GPS addresses
It provides an accurate address for every location in the country.
It makes communication easier during emergencies like fire, robbery, etc.
It helps to validate exact business locations on the map.
